The Annual Conference

For more than 20 years, the Conductors Guild has arranged annual conferences for conductors. The conference takes place in a different town every year with New York as a tri-annual turning point. Up till now, all conferences have taken place on the North American Continent, but in a unique collaboration with the Danish Conductors Association and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, this year, the conference will take place in Europe, namely in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark.

Danish conductor Peter Ettrup Larsen is in charge of the planning and coordination of this unique event. Since 1998 Peter has been on the board of the Danish Conductors Association and since 2005 he’s also been on the board of the Conductors Guild.

The Danish Conductors Association is an association of professional Danish conductors covering all aspects of musical life. Currently the association numbers 180 members. Considering the fact that there are only about five million Danes in the world, this number is quite high. The members of the association work primarily with symphony orchestras, military orchestras, theaters, big bands and choirs.

Danish Conductors Association
Conductor and composer Emil Reesen founded The Danish Conductors Association in 1937, acting as its Chairman until 1962.  Reesen is best remembered by the Danish population as the composer of one of the most popular Danish operettas ever, about the famous tenor Farinelli.

In 1962, professor and conductor Arne Hammelboe took over as Chairman of the association until 1997, by which time he had also retired as Professor of Conducting at The Royal Danish Academy of Music.  Conductor Frans Rasmussen was then elected Chairman in 1997, being only the third person to hold this title in the association's 63 year history.

In addition to his active and versatile conducting career, Frans Rasmussen taught conducting at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for almost 40 years.

The object of the Danish Conductors Association is to attend to the artistic, professional and economic interests of the members. This is achieved through various activities such as:
  • The distribution of the the collective Gramex-funds which is money that comes from copyright. These funds finance as well music promoting activities like live-performances and cd-recordings as educational purposes like study-visits and courses.
  • Administration of various grants.
  • Representation in various associations connected with copyright and in The Danish Art’s Counsil.
  • Course-activity.
  • The publication of the membership magazine "Kapelmesteren" ("The Conductor") three times a year.
  • Planning of the annual Danish Conductors Association’s birthday concert involving as many of the association’s members in one concert as possible.
  • Generate international focus on the conducting profession through board representation at the Conductors Guild in the USA.

The Board:
Chairman: Frans Rasmussen (conductor)
Deputy chairman: Jesper Grove Jørgensen (conductor and choir-conductor)
Treasurer: Peder Kragerup (leader of Tivoli's Big Band in Copenhagen)
Secretary/editor: Bodil Heister (composer and conductor of various theater-shows)
Member of the committee: Peter Ettrup Larsen (conductor)
